How a Dutch initiative mobilized thousands to cycle for cancer support
About Vrijthof-Vrijthof Challenge
What began as a deeply personal initiative by Willem ad=nd Mark van Abeleen after their family was affected by cancer, has now grown into one of the most notable cancer drives in the Netherlands.
Envisioned as a modest cycling fundraiser between two Dutch squares named ‘Vrijthof’, the initiative wanted to focus on cancer research and has completed three successful editions since its inception in 2019. In May of 2025, it saw a footfall of thousands and amassed millions in funding without any big fanfare or marketing and has helped contribute the proceeds to the KWF Dutch Cancer Society. Let’s understand how.
Community-driven fundraising to create Impact
Originally a local cycling challenge, the event has evolved to include walking, skating, running, and events for children and the differently-abled.

Not only do the sponsorship and funds directly support the Netherlands’ largest cancer research fund and a local hospital’s cancer department, it also powers infrastructure set-up and logistics for the event itself.
Flockler’s role in amplifying event impact
The finish line where the crowd congregated was utilized by Vrijthof to put up community display screens powered by Flockler that streamed everything from live photos, event updates, announcements, and live social content. The content spanned across participants, family members, sponsors, and those gathered to watch.
“Flockler helped us stream content from our main event platforms: Facebook and Instagram, and even put up customized messages of encouragement. Maybe next time we will use it across different checkpoints for the participants.”
adds Sander van Leeuwen, discussing ideas to personalize event experience in the future.
